Check out the new video from Never Elected

As part of the ongoing promotion for the reissue of their ‘Turbulent’ album, grungy rockers Never Elected have shared a brand new video clip for the brilliant ‘Hate Breeds Hate’.

‘Hate Breeds Hate’ captures everything that’s great about the band in one rather direct four minute blast. From the moment a harmonic bassline hits, there’s the feeling that the track is something special. Yes, it’s retro rock, and yes, it owes more than a little something to the alternative scene of the early 90s, but it quickly grows into something that sounds much bigger than its chief influences. The hazy, stoner-ish verses play like a slightly funky, arty Alice In Chains, and the heavy chorus riff sounds like a cross between early Mind Funk and classic Kings X,, but the end result sounds fresh, and by dropping in a classic 80s guitar solo en route, the band clearly aim to please a broader spectrum of rock fans than most.

What really counts here, of course, is the playing itself. The guitar work is hard yet accessible, and the vocals capture a slightly sinister vibe that really works against the groove laden melody, but everything comes back to that smart bassline. It knows it’s smart, but unlike your average funk metal band – and most of ’em were average – it still allows enough room for other melodic interests to dominate when needed. There’s a feeling that this is the kind of music the truly awful NFU thought they were making back in 2016. ‘Hate Breeds Hate’ ia retro, but in the best possible way, and if you still love a 90s vibe, you’ll adore this track.
