French band Vertex have often been reliable when it comes to a heavy riff, but their current single ‘Leviathan’ really raises the bar in terms of a brilliantly intense sound.

Combining elements of progressive metal and hardcore, the track conveys a fantastic mathcore sound that brings out the best in a massively downtuned riff. The weight of that riff is enough alone to win over fans of heavy sounds, but combined with a semi-bleak, yet striking, performance video, it really deserves to elevate the band’s profile. By mixing mathcore, progressive metal and hardcore with now retro djent tones, the track quickly becomes a heavy and angular assault that’s fascinating and frightening in equal measure.

The band released their debut EP ‘Scalable’ in 2019, and although the global pandemic slowed down any momentum, the band are set to return with a full length record later in 2023. In the meantime, check out the full video for ‘Leviathan’ below.
