“You’re a big man…” – Roy Budd’s classic score for ‘Get Carter’ to get box set treatment in July

‘Get Carter’ is widely considered to be one of the great British crime thrillers of the era.  The 1971 film really helped to cement Michael Caine’s popularity, but as much as featuring various quotable lines and a timeless performance from the beloved British actor, the film is also fondly remembered for its film score.

Roy Budd’s main theme is one of the best pieces of music from the decade and even inspired the melody to appear midway through The Human League’s ‘Dare’ almost a decade later.  Beyond that, the score is full of unmissable moments – and in July 2019, fans will get to experience Budd’s music in unabridged form, when Cherry Red Records expand the original soundtrack with a second disc featuring previously unavailable material.

In addition, the set includes a handful of extraneous remixes, but to make up for these, a third disc rounds up several highlights from Budd’s other unavailable scores. Pretty much guaranteed to be reason enough to buy this set even if you’ve bought the ‘Get Carter’ soundtrack before, ‘A Bit of Budd’ is a Budd fan’s dream. Included are pieces from ‘The Marsaille Contract’, ‘The Black Windmill’ and ‘Paper Tiger’.  Perhaps best of all are two excerpts from ‘The Stone Killer’, an oft forgotten 1973 vehicle directed by Michael Winner and starring Charles Bronson.  [Available from Indicator films here at present, but apparently is due to be going off catalogue very soon.]

Released on July 26th, Cherry Red’s 3CD set in hardbound book packaging promises to be the definitive release of a definitive work. Check out the full tracklist below.
