ccording to Joan Wasser – aka Joan As Police Woman – “songs live beyond their creators” and “settle into themselves over time”. With this in mind, the whole of 2007’s ‘Real Life’ album has been not just re-recorded, but re-imagined.

One of its key tracks, ‘Feed The Light’ has been transformed from a sparse sounding, almost spooky, folk-tinged number with hints of Victoria Williams, into something warmer and arguably more accessible. The music now centres around an electric piano and steady beats, almost drawing from a very retro trip hop source, while occasional lead bass brings an extra layer of complexity and mournful drones feed into a pleasingly downbeat style. Joan’s fragile voice still remains recognisable as it weaves in and out of the musical layers, topping a recording that actually sounds more appealing than the original cut.

In addition, Joan has filmed ‘The Real Life Anniversary Sessions’, which captures the musician and friends presenting the original album material in an intimate setting. This, although minimalist from a visual perspective, is a must see for long time fans.
