The first thing that’s striking about ‘Right Back’, the current single from Reading based newcomers Lost Velvet, is how perfect it sounds. The rhythm track cracks through the slow arrangement with a genuine edge that’s rather striking. It contrasts the mellow music and hazy vocals brilliantly. The second thing you’ll likely note is how quickly this band are able to set up a great atmosphere: the sharp production contrasting with the trippy vocal sounds evokes a great mood even before the first verse has reached its climax.

With the aid of great guitar parts throughout – centring around muted notes, then stretching into almost prog-ish, soaring tones – the band capture something special, a sound that appears to blend the mellow elements of ‘OK Computer’ era Radiohead and classic Pineapple Thief with the alt-rock flair of Deftones side project Team Sleep.

Aiming for a sophisticated, late night vibe, the track isn’t big on chorus hooks. Instead, it just lets a great melody wash over the audience, and those willing to be swept along are guaranteed a great listen.
