Watch: Absinthe Green present ‘Death By A Thousand Cuts’ [Trigger Warning: Graphic Imagery]

If you’re only vaguely aware of Absinthe Green, chances are you discovered them via their love of cover tunes. In 2025, they gained some online traction with a fun (but rather wobbly) cover of the Spice Girls hit ‘Viva Forever’, transforming the popular ballad into a guitar driven, gothic workout that allowed the song to be heard in a whole new way. Every Xmas, they also reshare their cover of ‘Santa Baby’, reworked with a heavy doom riff as ‘Satan Baby’.

If you’re a fan, of course, you’ll be acutely aware that the Greek band should be considered anything but a novelty. Their self-penned works have been known to tackle some very serious and rather heavy topics. Never was this more the case than on their current single ‘Death By A Thousand Cuts’.

Stepping away from the heavier side of things, this short number weaves a quiet and rather disquieting melody around muted guitar chords. A hushed vocal tackles the themes of suicidal thoughts and self-harm, though never in a heavy-handed way. The pure melody driving the hushed vocal plays as something dark yet beautiful, and the fact the volume remains consistent throughout further adds to a feeling of something deeply atmospheric. This is rich in message, certainly, but never laid on with a sledgehammer; almost as if a caring voice is calling out to those in need. Added to the quiet arrangement, sparse drumming helps to propel the piece forward, and the cymbal-free performance adds a further depth to the atmospheric sound in the most simple way.

There’s so much about this mellow but striking performance that makes it one of Absinthe Green’s finest to date. The song is presented with an even more striking video, which can be viewed below. As mentioned at the beginning of the clip, however, the video features potentially upsetting imagery and should be approached with caution.
