Nevaris shares live version of ‘Ninth Sun’ ahead of EP release

In February 2026, Nevaris will release ‘SoundSession’, a live EP recorded in collaboration with the legendary Bill Laswell. As a preview, a live version of ‘Ninth Sun’ has been shared as a digital single.

A perfect preview of things to come, the five minute jam presents a solid groove from the outset. Heavy, dub influenced basses (supplied by Jonathan Maron, based around melodies written by Laswell) clash with a very natural sounding drum part, setting a slow rhythm in place. From there, DJ Logic’s turntables add extra layers of sound add to the rhythmic elements with repeated scratches, bringing what could possibly be described as the performance’s only obviously retro element. Everything else has such a classic style, it feels utterly timeless.

Although the Jah Wobble/Sly & Robbie-esque bass aims to be the dominant force here, and definitely goes a long way to really making this track, the ear is currently drawn to some thoughtful sax work. Weaving in and out of the slow rhythm, Peter Applebaum’s playing is suitably measured, and although he never opts for anything especially flashy, his tone and presence bring this track more of a floaty feel, which contrasts the heavy bass, seemingly effortlessly.

For fans of dub, as well as elements of melodic jazz and trip hop, this live version of ‘Ninth Sun’ is a genuine treat. You can take a listen to the full track via the Bandcamp widget below. An excerpt from the studio session can also be watched via the embedded YouTube link.
