Five months ago, Vulgarithm released their single ‘Welcome To The Forgotten Show’, an angry workout blending dance beats and spoken word verses with an absolutely blistering chorus where the artist clearly looked to ‘Filth Pig’ era Ministry for influence. The verses might not have struck a chord with the rock and metal audience immediately, but the riff on the chorus came with such a force it was hard to ignore. With a sharp edge and an absolutely classic industrial sound, the rockier elements of the track helped to form the one man band’s best track to date.
‘Another Lie’, the current single from the Vulgarithm stable, is potentially even more divisive. The dancier elements work around some very unforgiving glitchy beats, working towards far more of a hardcore sound. This is actually well suited to the spoken word delivery – in places making Vulgarithm sound like the bastard child of Max Rael and a junglist throwback from the early 90s – throwing the listener into a world of abrasive noise that’s hard to ignore.
Clearly realising the opening verse might be a little too challenging for some, the chorus takes a more melodic stance than before, mixing hard edged alternative rock riffs with a harmonic vocal that stretches, surprisingly naturally, over the busy backdrop. By the time the two different extremes meet, ‘Another Lie’ sounds like a heavier Powerman 5000 remixed within an inch of their life. Those who like what they hear will ultimately love it, despite Vulgarithm pushing for the extreme.
