Watch: Wax Mechanix shares new video clip for ‘Saltwalter Sisters’

Those who’ve been paying attention to the rock underground over the post-lockdown years will probably be aware of Wax Mechanix. The multi-instrumentalist has released a succession of great sounding, retro influenced tunes – and here’s another.

In the artist’s own words, it’s “a unique heavy jam”, and it’s easy to hear what he means. The opening riffs play off a bluesy melody, but the semi-busy acoustic slant gives the melody the kind of feel that seems a little proggy. Moving into the meat of the track, programmed loops and a chunkier riff lend a little influence from early Beck, but a huge vocal ensures any simarities end there.

The number’s chunky groove allows for even more of an interesting melody via a few extra acoustic chops bringing a slightly funky feel, and beneath the electric driven hook – where fuzzier guitars lean much further into Wax’s rock interests – the way his guitar lines weave in and out of the programmed rhythm adds a very pleasing flair. This is musically great, but as with all the best Wax tunes, a great hook trumps any of the musical twists that take his fancy, and here, a huge vocal goes head to head with a Kravitz inspired riff to create something that has a very retro and 90s feel, but sounds superb in the present. The busy arrangement leaves no obvious room for a ahowy lead break, and this further allows the vocal melody to carry a lot of the weight.

Those into rock sounds that dare to pull influence from different genres will definitely like what they hear here, and this track definitely secures Wax a place among 2025’s cult musical figures.
