In June 2025, one man band Tooth Gore released their excellent ‘For Losers, By Losers’ album, an almost filler free collection that drew influence from melodic punk, surf rock, power pop and even post rock to create a riff driven collection that really captured the spirit of the DIY artist’s earlier singles.
As part of the album’s ongoing promotion, ‘Uncomfortable’ has been chosen as a digital single. In many ways, it’s the perfect choice to highlight the album itself. Although ‘For Losers…’ arguably features more sophisticated material, in terms of attention grabbing via the aid of a driving riff, this song is an immediate hit. It takes a slightly chunkier stance than some of the other Tooth Gore wares, and that’s clear from the get go when Kobi Joe embarks on a riff that sounds like a weird mash up of noisier aspects of Bob Mould’s ‘Blue Hearts’ and the impossibly overhyped Royal Blood, tackling something with the buoyancy of Neal Hefti’s classic ‘Batman’ theme.
It has a knockabout quality, but listeners shouldn’t expect anything novelty here. The pl faying is as tight as hell; the grubbier tone to the main riff shows that, despite hopping between genres, Kobi can really rock out when called upon to do so, and the presence of a distorted vocal adds to an alt-punk spirit that really aims to shake the listener. ‘For Losers, By Losers’ features stronger tracks and ‘Uncomfortable’ sometimes feels a little trashy in relation to the bigger picture, but as a stand alone listen, it’s actually superb – the kind of track set to pull in new ears.
