Bowling For Soup team up with able machines for spirited cover of Elastica’s ‘Connection’

The always entertaining Bowling For Soup are kicking off what promises to be another successful year with a cover tune. Teaming up with able machines (featuring power pop cult hero Linus of Hollywood), they’ve reworked a 90s classic, Elastica’s ‘Connection’, and created something even more indebted to new wave than the original cut.

The track’s original riff – brazenly “borrowed” from Wire’s ‘Three Girl Rhumba’ – holds firm, but dressed with extra synths and a brighter sound, everything somehow sounds even more spiky. The music’s great, but this really sells itself with a superb dual vocal. Tay Côlieé displays a huge amount of confidence from the off, and although Justine Frischmann’s sneer has been reworked into something with a much poppier edge, the melody remains distinctive and still sounds great.

Jaret Reddick brings more of his usual power pop charm, and together, the vocalists sound like they’re having a blast. BFS fans are pretty much guaranteed to love this, but in some ways, it should be seen as being more of a showcase to introduce those fans to able machines. Whichever way you look at it, this is a superb cover of an already superb track. You can check out the new video below.

In related news, Bowling For Soup will be touring the UK later in the year, on a co-headlining jaunt with singer-songwriter Frank Turner.
