Shannon Smith’s breakthrough single, 2023’s ‘Dance The Night Away’ introduced the Australian singer songwriter in fantastic style. The track’s upbeat nature, driven by stabbing keys, bright horns and a shamelessly infectious, wordless chorus presented a near perfect homage to the AM radio sounds of the past. It would have been easy for him to follow that with something equally uplifting, but instead, he chose to explore moody balladry and country influences on the tracks that followed.
These showcased a very different set of talents, promising that his debut album would be an interesting listen. When ‘Out of The Shadows’ finally appeared in 2025, it did not disappoint. It was, in the main, more downbeat than ‘Dance The Night Away’ promised, but it would’ve been hard to keep up that kind of sunny optimism over the course of a whole record.
As part of the promotion cycle for the album, album, Shannon has now shared ‘Feel Good’ as a single. Another of his more upbeat numbers, it takes some great brass and works it against a jaunty rhythm, where Shannon explores an arrangement blending retro pop, soul and funk. The flippant mood might make everything feel a little less deep than some of the album cuts, but his band are hugely tight and the hooks are strong. The way a hard lead guitar works in tandem with a very strong rhythm offers something very 70s, and although this doesn’t always feel like “typical Shannon Smith” fare, it’s very well played. There’s a pinch of influence from mid 70s Chicago here, especially through some of the brass fills, and a great vocal that sets everything off very effectively. It’s certainly the kind of track that should inspire people to backtrack and check out the full album.
