Watch: Incredibly rare footage of Black Sabbath surfaces

In 1977, the foundations of Black Sabbath were shaken when Ozzy Osbourne quit the band. Undettered, guitarist Tony Iommi called upon a vocalist he knew from his pre-fame days. Enter Dave Walker.

Walker, previously with The Idle Race and Savoy Brown, will likely be best remembered to most for his brief stint with Fleetwood Mac, contributing some great vocals to their underrated 1973 LP ‘Penguin’.

The singer’s time with Fleetwood Mac was short, but not as short as his time with the Sabs would turn out to be. Walker played just one show with the band, appearing on BBC Midland’s Look East news show. Mythologised by fans for decades, only rough audio has ever circulated after the event, not especially making the show feel any more real.

Until now.

In what feels like a major miracle, the footage from Look East has surfaced on YouTube in absolutely pristine quality, and you can now withness what retrospectively feels like an odd blip in the Sabbath saga in all of its glory. Whilst the featured track, the then unreleased ‘Junior’s Eyes’, sounds strong here, it’s strange hearing it without Ozzy’s distinctive style.

Discovering this brings hope for other rock and metal rarities that might be lurking out there somewhere…
