Watch: Gustaffson invites fans to ‘Dance To The Algorithm’

In October 2024, Gustaffson released ‘On Broadway’, a brilliantly theatrical single that fused muted guitar parts with a waltzing time signature and a crooned vocal to create something that brought a fantastic twist to the world of adult pop. More than style over substance, the single also ultilised a huge yet simple hook to make the track even more memorable.

A year on, Gustaffson’s equally cool ‘Dance To The Algorithm’ presents a very different side to the multi-talented artist. From the outset, the music sets up a groove that mixes funk with westcoast AOR, presenting a rich sound where a raft of horns meets an electric piano for an authentically 70s sound. This may be musically different, but against a solid, effortlessly danceable rhythm, there’s a soaring and rich sounding vocal that’s unmistakeable, and Gustaffson fills the track with soul infused melodies that fit the arrangement perfectly. With tones that occasionally sound like a lighter, more melodic Hozier, the voice quickly latches onto a smart yet simple hook, before stretching out on a bigger sounding climax that allows various longer notes to take centre stage.

In terms of adult pop, this isn’t “new” as such, but it’s smartly arranged, and flawlessly executed. It’s the kind of track that’s designed to pep up many a Friday night playlist, and for those who’ve already been won over by Gustaffson’s past works, represents the kind of musical return that’ll be considered very welcome indeed.

Take a listen to this great track below.
