Most people wouldn’t argue with the theory that Johnny Cash’s musical rebirth in the 90s introduced the legendary country icon to a whole new audience. REAL GONE GOES OUT: Marmozets – Student Central (ULU), London 7/2/2018
It’s the coldest February night on record. If it isn’t, then it certainly feels like it. On the outskirts of London, temperatures have dropped to -4° and even in the city, it’s reached an unwelcoming freezing point. Outside Student Central (formerly ULU), the gathering crowd appears fidgety, but not enough to dampen any sense of pending excitement. That said, a young man audibly claims there’s “about forty seconds until doors open”, so he’s obviously found himself on the wrong side of comfortable with the weather.
Luckily, once inside, things are much warmer. The gig area for Student Central is a no frills square room with a stage and tonight, a crowd for the Marmozets has packed it to the rafters. The band have previously played the main stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals and are scheduled to appear at the 2018 Download Festival, so this opportunity to catch them in a somewhat intimate setting is very welcome…and something about the band’s upward trajectory in popularity recently suggests this might even be one of the last times we’re able to do so.
Star Shaped Festival 2018: Line-up possibilities
In August 2017, the Star Shaped Festival brought a line up of classic Britpop to four cities. The events were much loved by fans, not least of all because the festival featured the unexpected return of Sleeper.
MAMMOTH WEED WIZARD BASTARD / SLOMATICS – Totems (Split)
What happens when you take two doom bands whom have a mutual respect for each other and give them one side of an LP each? Possibly one of the heaviest records ever! ‘Totems’, from Black Bow Records, combines five previously unreleased tracks – three from Slomatics and two from Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard – and presents the ultimate in doom, though somehow without things ever feeling as if they’re verging on a pointless macho pissing contest.
Watch the new animated video from Darlingside
With wistful acoustic guitars and harmony vocals aplenty, folk-pop troupe have been favourably compared to Fleet Foxes and Sufjan Stevens.
Their current single ‘Futures’ features a world of harmonies and its feelgood qualities bode well for their new full length album ‘ExtraLife’, released on February 23rd.
The uplifting sounds of the single have been complimented by an animated video clip, which you can watch in full below.
