“I’ve been holding back the words until I mean it”, sings David Ottestadt, aka The Workday Release, during his current single ‘Say A Lot With Light’. The beautifully arranged and piano based pop track reminds us all that sometimes less can be more, and that unexpectedly heartfelt moments can mean the world to the recipient.
Such a feeling of warmth powers the entire track, despite being relatively minimalist. Coupling smooth singer songwriter vibes with an atmospheric video, the new single allows the listener to ultimately “feel”. It’s a brilliant piece of adult pop – one of the finest arrivals in 2021 to date. It’s also a handy reminder that for all the times music challenges us, it can still sound at its best when acting as a comfort blanket. Ottestadt’s gift for a melody recalls John Ondrasik and Five For Fighting; his melancholy air is reminiscent of the great Paul Buchanan, but by combining the best elements of both, The Workday Release brings some very mournful pop into the twenty first century with a genuine sense of ease and brilliance.
‘Say A Lot With Light’ is taken from the upcoming album ‘Like The Light of Stars’ which is released via Enci Records on April 16th.
